About Us

Our Mission.

OBI's mission is to support youth and adults with disabilities to experience full inclusion in their communities as they learn, work, and pursue their paths to personal success.

What Sets Us Apart.

The individuals we serve are empowered to make their own choices and to find self-worth through individualized jobs, community exploration, and meaningful day programming. Our passionate, dedicated, and supportive staff members respect every individual we serve to help them reach their full potential. Our dedicated families and volunteers from the community contribute so much time, energy, and financial support to help make OBI the vital organization it is today.

Our Beginning.

In 1962 in response to a need for occupational services for adults with developmental disabilities, a group of parents, educators and advocates came together to establish the Sheltered Workshop of Anne Arundel County (SWAAC). It began in an old firehouse on Truck House Road in Severna Park, MD. As the demand for services increased, SWAAC re-located to a warehouse facility on Langley Road in Glen Burnie.  In 1990, with the development of a community employment placement program, SWAAC was renamed to Opportunity Builders, Inc. (OBI). Due to space limitations, in 1991, the program moved to a 16,000-square-foot warehouse in Hanover, MD where OBI expanded to 30,000 square feet before moving to our newly, constructed 41,000-square-foot Millersville home in 2009.

Unlimited Opportunities.

At OBI, we are dedicated to engaging individuals in new opportunities. Whether it’s sailing for the first time, learning how to take care of themselves, or obtaining employment, we strive to help those we serve become as independent as possible while fully supported by staff.
