OBI's Coronavirus Updates

Updates and news about OBI's operations as it pertains to the current pandemic.

June 4, 2020

While individuals have not been coming into our building since mid-March, we've been busy preparing and planning for our reopening and future services. We appreciate the numerous mask donations we've received, and are told more are on their way. We began offering Zoom virtual parties almost immediately on Fridays. These parties have now grown to 2 parties a day (3 on Wednesdays!) every week day. Individuals who attend these virtual parties have enjoyed karaoke, dance parties and sing-a-longs, BINGO and a weekly virtual field trip, just to name some of the fun events. Feedback has been extremely positive and involvement continues to grow each week as we continue to promote these activities through email and on Facebook. This past Wednesday, we began offering a daily trivia contest on Facebook each week day.

Our DSPs are continuing to reach out to those we serve through virtual supports and socially distant visits on a daily basis. While we have run in to a few obstacles with our efforts to connect with all those we serve, we remain positive. Read more...

To say things have been unexpected would be an understatement. Like many of you we have been working hard to adapt to our current normal. With that being said, OBI’s programming as we use to know it, will not reopen until we receive guidance from Governor Hogan that it is safe to do so again. We anticipate this being several weeks to months away. In the interim, we are working hard to bring new virtual services.

We are thrilled to announce we have been awarded a Paycheck Protection Program loan and we will be bringing our staff back from furlough once the funds have been dispersed. Together we are looking forward to reaching out to those we serve through virtual platforms. There continues to be significant fluidity as we evaluate what resources our staff have to work from home, what resources the individuals we serve have in their homes and what support OBI can provide. As we navigate through these times, we look forward to working together to support the more than 350 individuals served by OBI. Read more...

Dear OBI Friends and Family,

These have been uncertain times. In this uncertainty we want to assure the OBI community that we have continued to place the safety of our staff and the individuals we serve paramount to all things. With this being said; it has required a drastic reduction in our service options while we wait out this pandemic.

There are many ways we continue to serve our community which include; participating in person centered plans through remote meetings, extending our app-based transportation offerings, supporting a limited number of individuals in the community, and working as a team to ensure that when staff and individuals are able to return, the building and program are ready to support them.  Read more...

In order to provide the safest environment for staff and the individuals served by OBI, the agency will be stopping all services to individuals except for transportation from home to work 3/16/2020 through 3/27/2020.

If you typically receive transportation to work, you must reach out to Tyler Carter at and Colleen Spaniol at to confirm transportation needs.

To be clear, no individual will be brought to OBI’s building. If you typically come to OBI then go to work, OBI will only be able to offer the transportation to work for the next two weeks.

We will update at the end of the week of 3/20/2020 if further precautions will need to be taken.

We do not take any of these decisions lightly however, we have reached an unprecedented time requiring unprecedented response.

Based on Governor Hogan's announcement this afternoon we will be open tomorrow (Friday 3/13/2020) for all individuals and staff. Please look for an announcement tomorrow afternoon for further updates regarding OBI's upcoming operating days. We encourage anyone who feels they need to stay home to do so.

Statement from OBI's interim co-CEOs Bill Kuethe and Chet Lawrence addressing Novel Coronavirus:
We would like to reassure all stakeholders for Opportunity Builders Inc (OBI) that the Board of Directors, Interim CEOs and administration for the agency, are closely monitoring the ongoing Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), nationally and within the State of Maryland.
As our Governor Larry Hogan stated – we encourage all employees, participants, families and community business partners "not to panic, but to take this seriously and to stay informed."
